NHSO: Scammer trying to take advantage of voter ID law
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says it is investigating a possible fraud tied to voter information and the state’s voter identification law.
A citizen reported a man who was approaching people at the Golden Corral on New Center Drive. The witness say the man told them would need a special identification card to be able to vote in next month’s election. That is not true. The state’s voter ID requirements do not go into effect until 2016.
The suspect is described as a white male about 30-40 years old wearing glasses. He reportedly approached a couple having lunch in the restaurant and informed the couple that he was signing people up for the new voter ID card. He told them he needed all of their information such as name, address, party affiliation and Social Security Number to get them signed up for the ID.
