NHSO, WPD invite the community to National Night Out on Wednesday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Law enforcement and public safety agencies in the Cape Fear are teaming up for a night of fun with the community.

The Wilmington Police Department and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are partnering to host “National Night Out” on Wednesday at Independence Mall from 6 pm to 8 pm.

People will be able to meet law enforcement officers and other public safety workers, play games, win giveaways, and more. Sheriff Ed McMahon will even take his turn inside the dunk tank.

Police Chief Donny Williams and Sheriff McMahon said the event is all about connecting with the community.

“It’s all about bringing the community together, bringing people together because there’s been so much division this past year or so so we just want to use this as an opportunity to bring people together,” Williams said.

“Such a big part of keeping the community safe is having their trust,” McMahon said. “If they trust us, if they have confidence in us, they’re going to see we’re grandpas, grandmas, moms, dads. You know, we’re in the community the same as them. So we all together can make this community as safe as possible.”

Wilmington Fire Department will also be there, highlighting escape planning and giving away bike helmets. Leland Police Department will also take part in the event.

Admission to the event is free.
