Ninth-graders work on high school diploma, college degree

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — As classes started Tuesday some ninth-graders got a chance to work toward a high school diploma and a college degree.

Tuesday was the first time Wilmington Early College High School opened its doors at Cape Fear Community College. Sixty-two students were accepted into the program.

In five years, they will have earned a high school diploma and associates degree — normally a six year process.

Teachers hope they will go on to earn a bachelors degree.

Wilmington Early College High School Principal Ivy Murrain said, “I want them to receive an education that will take them far not just in Wilmington, but in the United States and throughout the world.”
