No group home in Leland

There will be no level three group home in a Leland neighborhood after all.

Neighbors told WWAY they are relieved today after a very brief meeting on the issue last night.

People we spoke to say the meeting lasted only about five minutes. The woman who proposed the group home, Michelle Graham, was not at the meeting, but instead wrote a letter for the county commissioners to read aloud.

It said the Snee Farm neighborhood “wasn’t ready to welcome kids with a variety of mental disorders.”

Because she felt the neighborhood was not open to the group home, Graham withdrew her application.

Neighbors told WWAY their main concern was safety.

Snee Farm resident Ron Hancock said, “My biggest concern along with all the other neighbors was the safety of our kids going up and down the street.”

Neighbors say nearly 100 people were at last night’s meeting.

After Ms. Graham’s letter was read aloud, the attendees joined in a unanimous applause.

WWAY tried repeatedly to contact Michelle Graham for comment. She did not return any of our phone calls.
