TEAM OF THE WEEK: Home-cooking helps North Brunswick Scorpions
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — We recognized the North Brunswick High School football team the WWAY Logo Shoppe Team of the Week award on Wednesday.
Larry Brock is the new head coach at North Brunswick. He replaced longtime coach Garry Bishop.
“These suckers have worked, man,” Brock said. “I give them credit. I hope we keep it rolling.”
North Brunswick defeated Whiteville 28-19 Friday in the season opener for both squads. It was clearly a team effort from the backup quarterback turned starter Jathan DeBerry to kicker Michael Rivers.
“One person that did an outstanding job was our kicker,” Brock said. “He scored nine points in the game. He’s a sophomore kid and kicked three field goals. I’m not going to take anything away from those other guys, but the snapper and the holder all that stuff worked out. Those three field goals were worth nine points, and we won by nine.”
“Coach didn’t care what position we were last year,” Scorpion Jordan Howard. “He didn’t listen to any of those coaches. He wanted to see what we could do ourselves and we had to fight for our spots.”
Hard work in the weight room has paid off, but that’s just a part of the Scorpions’ early formula for success.
“I think the difference was us just wanting to come out, trying to do what we were coached to do just wanting it,” Latrell Hill said. “That’s all it takes.”
Coach Brock also wanted his players to change up the North Brunswick game day tradition.
“We had a home-cooked meal. Something that made us feel like we were at home,” DeBerry said. “We had it right here at our cafeteria. In the past we usually went out to eat.”
Shaquan Graham liked the home-cooked meal, but he thought it missed one overlooked ingredient.
“The home-cooked meal needed a little salt. Just a tad bit,” he said. “It definitely needed a tad bit more salt.”
Brock thought it was perfect.
“It was chicken and rice, and it was as perfect as it gets,” the coach said. “I think it may have been what put us over the edge.”
Perhaps it did, and with that let’s give it up for this week’s WWAY Logo Shoppe Team of the Week the North Brunswick Scorpions!
