North Carolina touts ‘Summer of Soccer’ as major events bring millions in economic impact

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — North Carolina officials are celebrating a “Summer of Soccer” as major events, international team partnerships and upcoming World Cup-related activities bring visitors and economic activity to communities across the state.
The effort is being supported in part through the state’s Major Events, Games, and Attractions Fund, known as the MEGA Fund, which helps communities compete for high-profile sporting and entertainment events.
“North Carolina is proud to be enjoying the summer of soccer,” Governor Josh Stein said. “All across our state, different events are bringing visitors, excitement, and an economic boost to North Carolina businesses while showcasing everything our state has to offer.”
The announcement comes after nearly 58,000 fans attended the U.S. Men’s National Team Send-Off Match at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte over the weekend. The U.S. defeated Senegal 3-2 in the friendly match ahead of international competition.
State officials also highlighted The Soccer Tournament in Cary, which recently attracted nearly 58,000 fans during its run. A post-event analysis estimated the tournament generated $14.7 million in direct economic impact for the Cary and Wake County area in 2025.
Looking ahead, North Carolina is expected to play a significant role in preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Germany will train in Winston-Salem, Norway will hold its training camp in Greensboro and Scotland will train in Charlotte.
The state is also preparing to host the 2026 MLS All-Star Game in Charlotte on July 29, following the World Cup.
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley said the events provide benefits beyond the playing field.
“Major events don’t just create memorable experiences for fans — they create real economic value for North Carolina communities,” Lilley said. “Through the MEGA Fund, we’re helping local partners attract events that support jobs, drive visitor spending, and showcase communities across our state to national and international audiences.”
State officials said more than $15 million has already been awarded through the MEGA Fund for 2026 events, including support for NASCAR events in Rockingham and Winston-Salem and nearly $985,000 for the Professional Pickleball Association National Championships in Cary. Another $21 million has been committed toward events still being recruited.
Tourism continues to be a major economic driver in North Carolina. According to state officials, visitors spent a record $37.2 billion traveling to and within the state in 2025, supporting nearly 231,000 jobs and generating more than $2.7 billion in state and local tax revenue.
The MEGA Fund was created by the North Carolina General Assembly and is administered by the N.C. Department of Commerce to support sporting events, cultural attractions and entertainment experiences designed to boost local economies and tourism.
