Wilmington, N.C. (WWAY) — The Northside Food Cooperative hosted the Wilmington Black History community dinner Thursday night.

Project Manager of the Northside Food Cooperative, Cierra Washington, started the night off by announcing a new moment in Black History. The approval of a new grocery store in their community. She also thanked the New Hanover County Endowment for the donation for the project.

Two community members were also recognized. Anita Richardson and Debra Gray were presented Port City Pioneer Awards for their work in feeding the people of the Northside.

There was also plenty of food for everyone to enjoy, a community art project that was worked on throughout the night, and a visit from Seeds of Healing.

“This all started to bring the community together. We were coming off of Covid and people were used to being in their homes, and so we came up with this idea, ‘hey lets like do a community dinner’,” said Northside Food Cooperative member Qailinn Bowen.

Though this is a big win in getting a grocery store in the northside, Bowen wants people to know there is still a lot of work to be done.
