Nuclear Science Week Big Event happening at UNCW
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Folks in Wilmington are celebrating Nuclear Science Week.
The three-day Big Event is happening at UNCW’s Education Building.
The event is sponsored by GE Hitachi and Duke Energy Progress and hosted by the Wilmington Area Local Section of the American Nuclear Society. The Big Event started Thursday and runs through Saturday.
This is the first time Nuclear Science Week is being hosted in Wilmington, and more than 1,000 people are expected to attend.
“Thursday we had approximately 500 kindergarten through 8th grade students who went through student workshops where they learned about nuclear science and technology,” Chairman for National Nuclear Science Week in Wilmington Derek Bass said.
Bass said the event will kick into high gear on Friday with panel sessions and movie screenings. A Nuclear Science Technology Expo with giveaways and raffle prizes will take place on Friday and Saturday.
All events are free and open to the public.
“Our mission for Nuclear Science Week is to engage the public and educate them on all of the benefits and contributions that the nuclear sciences and technologies have for our society and for humanity,” 2016 Nuclear Science Week Big Event Co-Chair Maria Pfeffer said.
