Nuclear warning sirens to sound around Brunswick Nuclear Plant Oct. 7

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — If you hear nuclear warning sirens near the Brunswick Nuclear Plant on Oct. 7, officials say there is no need to take action.

Duke Energy and county emergency management officials will conduct a full-volume test of the outdoor warning sirens surrounding the plant between 10 and 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The sirens will sound at full volume for approximately three minutes as officials make sure the system is working properly.

No action is required from the public during the scheduled test.

Duke Energy maintains 38 outdoor warning sirens within 10 miles of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant.

Some sirens may be tested more than once during the scheduled testing period. Additional testing could also take place after 11 a.m. if maintenance is required.

Because the sirens are being sounded as part of a test, local television and radio stations will not interrupt regular programming with Emergency Alert System messages.

During an actual emergency requiring the sirens, local radio and television stations would provide emergency information and instructions to the public.

Testing is conducted in cooperation with emergency management officials in Brunswick and New Hanover counties, who are responsible for activating the sirens.

The Brunswick Nuclear Plant is located about 2 miles north of Southport.
