Oak Island names interim chief as current top cop nears retirement

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Oak Island has decided who will lead its police department for the time being as the current chief heads toward retirement.

The town has tapped Maj. Greg Jordan to serve as interim chief starting today. Last fall Chief Van Eddinger announced he would retire at the end of February after nearly 30 years in law enforcement.

Jordan started his law enforcement career in 1991 with the former Long Beach Police Department. He continued with the department through Long Beach’s merger with Yaupon Beach to become the Town of Oak Island in 1999. Jordan has been Oak Island PD’s assistant chief since 2007 and currently handles many of the department’s day-to-day operations, according to a town news release.

The town says it will advertise for a police chief in the coming months. It will honor Eddinger at the town council meeting Feb. 15.
