Oak Island sued by pier operator
OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The Oak Island Pier operator is suing the Town of Oak Island for “breach of contract”.
According to the complaint filed by Oak Island Pier, LLC and A.C. Thomas, Jr, the town has been quote, “grossly negligent due to its failure to make necessary repairs to the pier.”
The plaintiff said as a result, he has sustained damages in excess of $50,000 and continues to incur damages until the pier is repaired.
The town can not comment on the lawsuit, but the town manager did say that council will take action at tomorrow’s regular scheduled meeting to vote on a contract for engineers to begin the rebuilding process. They hope to get started in September of this year and the pier be fully operational by spring of 2018.
On April 13th, town officials released this statement:
“The Oak Island Town Council understands how important the Oak Island Pier is to our community. Our first priority has to be safety though, and we have closed the Fishing Pier until further notice; the restaurant and tackle shop can remain open. While we are still working with our insurance company and FEMA, we are actively looking for grants and any other possible funding we can use for rebuilding the Pier. We have already started the CAMA application process for a new Pier and have asked our engineer to provide drawings and specifications. Unfortunately, this does mean the Pier will not be open for the summer and fall seasons, but our goal is to have a new timber pier that will be enjoyed by all for decades and to have it completed by the spring season of 2018.”
