Oak Island council votes in favor of annexation
The Oak Island Town Council voted today in favor of annexing the Oakwood Glen neighborhood and most of the Long Beach Road near the town’s entrance.
It was close though. It was a three to two vote by the five town council members.
The area includes around 675 acres and 2,000 people.
Some of those people were there today and they were not too happy with the results.
Ed Ripper, whose property is being annexed, said, “Why should they annex us? What good is it going to do us? We have everything offered by the county that they say they’re going to give us. All they want is our tax dollars.”
Oak Island Mayor Johnie Vereen said the tax dollars gained do not add up to that much. He added that the area was bound to be annexed by one of the surrounding towns and that he plans to do right by the residents.
