Oak Island moves closer to buying Yaupon Pier

The Oak Island Town Council has taken another step towards the purchase of the Yaupon Peir.

By a vote of three to two last night, the council accepted a $300,000 state grant to help with the $1.5 million purchase of the pier.

The grant requires the town to match twenty-five percent. This grant will be added to a $500,000 grant already approved by the town.

The pier needs about $200,000 in repairs.

Mayor Johnie Vereen says the town still has pending grant applications he hopes will cover the additional costs.
