Ocean Fest earns two national awards for sustainability and event impact

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — The Pender County Tourism Development Authority announced that Ocean Fest has received two national honors from the Southeast Festivals and Events Association, recognizing the festival’s environmental leadership and community impact.
Ocean Fest, a Topsail Island-based celebration known for live music, vintage surf competitions, and environmental programming, was awarded the 2026 Kaleidoscope Green Initiative Award as well as the Best Event Impact Support Award for its collaboration with Wilmington Compost Company.
Festival director Liz Trojoan said the recognition highlights Ocean Fest’s commitment to combining community celebration with environmental education.
“Ocean Fest is honored to receive the national Green Initiative,” Trojoan said. “Our goal is to have a successful community event while infusing eco education. Being able to help make changes in our area and support like-minded conservation efforts is why we do what we do.”
She also emphasized the importance of the festival’s partnership with Wilmington Compost Company, calling Ocean Fest “a collection of environmentally conscious organizations.”
The Southeast Festivals and Events Association reported that 187 applications were submitted for this year’s Kaleidoscope Awards, representing festivals and events from Maryland to Texas. The awards recognize creativity, scale, and community impact across the region’s tourism industry.
“The Kaleidoscope Awards celebrate the passion and innovation that power our industry,” said Amy Doherty, SFEA Board Chair. “Festivals and events are creating experiences that leave lasting impressions on their communities and raise the standard for excellence across the Southeast.”
Pender County TDA Chair Susan Griffin praised Ocean Fest’s contributions to the local community, noting its role in raising awareness around environmental issues while supporting tourism.
“Ocean Fest makes a positive impact on the community we call home,” Griffin said.
