Officials: 5-year-old bitten by shark on NC coast

OCRACOKE, NC (AP) — Authorities say a 5-year-old girl has been
taken to the hospital after a shark attack on the North Carolina
coast.

Hyde County Deputy Emergency Services Director Brian Carter says
bystanders witnessed what was thought to be a shark attacking the
girl in the South Point area of Ocracoke Island around 5 p.m.
Tuesday. The girl’s name was not released.

Carter said in a statement that the girl was airlifted to a
local hospital and that her condition is unknown. He could provide
no further details when contacted by e-mail Tuesday night.
