UPDATE: Law enforcement investigates threats against Ashley, Hoggard
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Law enforcement is investigating threats against a pair of high schools.
Investigators said an online threat against Ashley High School was not credible. According to New Hanover County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer a juvenile posted to social media that he had a gun and planned to bring it to school. The teen has been found, and both he and his parents are cooperating with law enforcement. Lt. Brewer says a juvenile petition will be filed later today.
The threat began circulating on Sunday. School continued as scheduled Monday morning. The investigation is still underway.
Hoggard High School also received a bomb threat this morning, according to a tweet from New Hanover County Schools. The district said everyone was evacuated to the football stadium while law enforcement searched the building.

Today Valita Quattlebaum with New Hanover Count Schools said “We take incidents like this with utmost seriousness and work with law enforcement officials throughout the process.”
Quattlebaum said the decision was made not to notify parents about it at that time because it had been resolved as far as the facility is concerned. Additionally, it is an active investigation involving FERPA issues and an ongoing criminal investigation.
Today we spoke with one parent, Christina Hodge, over the phone who said even if the post was deemed not credible, she still wishes parents were notified of the threat. She said she found about the incident through a friend tagging her in a Facebook post and she decided to keep her high schooler and elementary student home from school today because of it.
Hodge said she is thinking about reaching out the the school system to see if there is a way to change policy of how and when parents are notified of incidents in the schools.
“They made a threat, whether or not they follow through with it or not, they made a threat,” Hodge said.
