Officials will report on probation for defendants in UNC death
RALEIGH (AP) — State officials are set to release a report on the probation of the two defendants charged with killing the student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
State Community Corrections Director Robert Guy will discuss the cases of Demario Atwater and Laurence Lovette on Wednesday. They are both charged with murder in the March 5 slaying of Eve Carson.
Atwater was convicted in June 2007 of possession of a firearm, but the paperwork to revoke his probation wasn’t served until February of this year. And when he appeared in court on the
violation just a few days before Carson’s death, he was sent to the wrong courtroom and the hearing was delayed.
Lovette was convicted Jan. 16 of breaking and entering in Durham, and he was also was on probation at the time of Carson’s death. He never met with a probation officer.
