WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A guilty verdict was reached late Thursday afternoon following more than three weeks of testimony and jury deliberations in the double murder trial of O’Monte Bell and Dyrell Green.

Both men were charged in the 2021 deaths of Koredreese Tyson and Bri’yanna Williams at the home of George Taylor, III. He was the former chief operating officer of TRU Colors Brewing, a Wilmington-based brewery and social impact company founded by Taylor that aimed to reduce gang violence by employing individuals from rival gangs and providing job training and support.

Bell and Green each faced multiple charges stemming from the incident, including the killings of Tyson and Williams, as well as the attempted murder of M’Kaila Walker.

According to court records, both defendants were charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Tyson and Williams, attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Walker, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the death of Tyson.

Prosecutors alleged the case involved a coordinated attack that left two people dead and another injured during the 2021 incident.

After weeks of testimony and deliberations, the jury returned to the courtroom around 4 p.m. and found both defendants guilty on all eight charges.

New Hanover County District Attorney Jason Smith praised the work of investigators and prosecutors for their handling of the case from the outset.

“It starts with how do you conduct the investigation in the first minutes of this case,” Smith said. “I would put the New Hanover Sheriff’s Office against any Sheriff’s Office in this country because of the way they conduct their investigations.”

Smith also praised his prosecutors, Doug Carriker and Sean Spiering, who handled the case. He also praised William Van Trigt who was the prosecutor on the previous case.

“You can’t have better prosecutors than them,” Smith said.

A victim impact statement from M’Kaila Walker was read by prosecutors during sentencing, noting she learned she was pregnant shortly after the shooting and later lost her baby.

A statement from Koredreese Tyson’s mother was also read in court.

Bri’yanna Williams’ mother delivered her statement in person, speaking about the memories the family will never have. She said she would have rather lost her daughter to cancer than in the way she died.

Smith said the statements were not only emotional, but also a reminder of the significant loss suffered by the victims’ families.

“You heard Ms. Tyson talk about her son and then she stands up and tells you good things about him,” he said. “It breaks your heart cause you won’t see this young man grow, she’ll never see her son again.”

Green and Bell also briefly addressed the families of the victims. Green apologized for what happened and said he did not know Tyson.

Smith said statements from the defendants carry weight in cases like this.

“When somebody stands up and apologizes for the death, it gives you a little bit of affirmation that we’re doing the right thing,” he said.

Shortly after Bell stood to speak, two women in the courtroom disrupted the proceedings and were removed by bailiffs.

Green and Bell were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on both counts of first-degree murder. They also each received additional sentences of 17 to 22 years for the attempted murder of Walker.

The trial concludes a lengthy court process in a case that has drawn significant attention due to the nature of the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Last year, Raquel Adams was also found guilty in the deaths of Tyson and Williams.
