Man dies in shooting on Nixon Street
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say a man was shot and killed in a shooting Friday evening.
“I came out to sit down and about five minutes I got out, I heard the gunshots and I see some young ladies running and when I came out, that’s when I see a lot of people around in the area say someone has been shot,” Antoinette Smith, a resident in the area, said.
The call came in around 5:30 p.m. near 6th and Nixon streets. One resident we talked to says she didn’t see what happened but she definitely heard it.
“We hear the gunshots. It seemed like it came from, like, down here and then a few minutes later, we head some down on the side street,” Holly Rause, a resident in the area, said.
Some neighbors said they heard up to six gunshots.
Wilmington police say the male victim was 27-year-old Montez Greene of Wilmington.
But this isn’t the first time this neighborhood has seen violence. On July 9, there was a shooting in 900 block of Nixon Street and on July 3, in the 700 block.
Some neighbors said this makes them fearful for their lives.
“The last couple of months, we’ve been having a lot of shooting over here. It’s not safe for the kids cause innocent bystanders can get shot and its making a bad thing,” Smith said.
“It is sad. I mean, shooting doesn’t benefit anyone. It doesn’t solve anything. Violence doesn’t solve anything,” Rause said.
Police say they are still investigating.
