One person injured after trench collapse

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department says one person was taken to the hospital after a trench collapse this afternoon.

It happened in a construction site at the 3800 block of Independence Blvd. When they got there, the fire department says workers were pulling the man out of a trench box. Firefighters helped get him out, and EMS took him to the hospital.

Investigators say it happened in class C soil, which they termed the worst for this kind of situation. They do not yet know what caused the collapse.

No word yet on the extent of the victim’s injuries.
