ONLY ON 3: Girl’s jaw shattered after beating from school mate

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A girl’s jaw is shattered after a male student from New Hanover High School hit her several times.

Earlier this month, 15-year-old Kelsey Currie was beaten so badly that her jaw was broken in five places.

Police charged 16-year-old Jarell Murry with a felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

“Jarell hit her jaw with such force that her bottom back teeth had come up into her back teeth,” Tracie Currie, Kelsey’s mother, said.

Kelsey said she and Murry used to be best friends and are both students at New Hanover High School.

“He was my bestest friend out here, so when he hit me it just shocked me,” Kelsey Currie said.

Kelsey Currie said it all started at the computer lab at the Reserve at Forest Hills apartment complex. She said the fight started when Murry asked her to get off a computer, and she refused.

“As soon as I looked at the computer he hit me,” Currie said. “When he hit me, I felt the blood. He broke my jaw at the first punch, because I felt the blood in my mouth, and my head hit the wall.”

Doctors operated on her jaw, and she was in the hospital for two days. She has not been able to go back to school because of the pain.

“It’s like every three hours, I can’t even talk,” Currie said. “I have to lay down and at least try to go to sleep, or I’ll be up crying.”

Police arrested Murry four days later. Tracie’s afraid his punishment won’t fit the crime.

“If he doesn’t get any jail time or a severe punishment when we go to court, I am afraid that he is going to think that this is OK,” Tracie said. “He’s going to go out and do this to another female or another male and possibly kill them.”
