ONLY ON 3: Grandmother speaks about Duplin witness murder
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Family members are grieving the loss of a father of three. Obediah Hester was murdered in Duplin County Wednesday night, and the search for his alleged killer continues.
Duplin County Sheriff Blake Wallace said Nashid Porter killed Hester, 27, Wednesday night in the 1000 block of Wards Road near Wallace. Hester’s grandmother, Sarah Bragg, said she was expecting him home Wednesday night after work.
“About ten minutes until 8 I got the knock on my door about my grandson being shot,” Bragg said.
Bragg added that her grandson had no enemies.
“Obi’s a loving child, Obi’s a sweet child. He’s a trusting child too. He trusts people entirely too easily, but he’s a really nice person,” Bragg said.
Such a sweet person, Bragg said, that he recently helped her just a few days ago.
“I was real upset for about a week and a half. I was just down. So, Saturday morning he put my Christmas tree up. He put my Christmas tree up,” Bragg said.
Bragg said she didn’t know much about the investigation or the suspect.
In September 2012, Porter was charged in the murder of Brian Theodus Grant in the Creekwood community in July. US Marshals arrested Porter in Fayetteville. In December 2012, Porter was indicted for first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon and given a $10,000 secured bond. That bond was later changed to $360,000 unsecured.
In February 2014, Judge W. Allen Cobb Jr. signed off on a pre-trial release for Porter, which included a $10,000 unsecured bond and electronic monitoring. Porter was also ordered to have no contact with witnesses. According to court records, Hester was named as a key witness in Porter’s murder trial.
Hester leaves behind three children — ages nine, two and five months. Bragg said Hester and his girlfriend were planning to marry in January.
“If you talk to anybody, you’re not going to hear anything negative about Obi. Obi is a good guy, really good guy. Well, he was a good guy. I’m talking about him just like he’s still here.. In my heart, he is,” Bragg said.
