ONLY ON 3: Woman says license plate office staff altered her check without her permission
WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A Columbus County woman said a license plate agency stole from her. Megan Williamson said it’s not about the money; she just wants to know why it happened.
Williamson said she keeps a close eye on her finances. And when things aren’t right, she notices.
“I balanced my check book last night, I knew the check would go in last night, and when I got up this morning it was $30 shorter than what it should have been, and I noticed the check was tampered with.”
Williamson is talking about a check she wrote to the NC License Plate agency in Whiteville on Friday, to pay to transfer a title for a car she just bought.
“It was $154.44 and they changed the five to an eight and changed the 50 marked through it and put 80 and forged my initials,” said Williamson.
Williamson said someone at the agency changed the information on the check, overcharging her $30.
“I called as soon as they opened this morning, and asked to speak with the supervisor or owner.”
The supervisor got back to Williamson.
“She came out there where I was and she basically said it was a honest mistake,” said Williamson.
But Williamson said there’s nothing honest about what happened.
“The way it goes is it got changed and it was not with my permission and I knew nothing about it.”
Williamson said she will be keeping an even closer eye on her finances and she encourages others to do the same.
“Check behind yourself, check everything before they leave, get a receipt and make sure,” said Williamson.
We reached out to the license plate office in Whiteville. The manager said they have no comment right now but the matter is under investigation.
Williamson said her bank let the check through because they thought she had initialed allowing the amount change.
