ONLY ON 3: Standoff with armed man ends peacefully

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some tense moments in a New Hanover County neighborhood this afternoon. WWAY was the only station on the scene of a standoff on Janice Lane near Middle Sound Loop Road.

New Hanover County deputies responded to a suicide attempt. Officers said the man pointed a gun at them at one point. Part of the road was closed down for a short time while they dealt with the situation.

“Once deputies got on the scene, he brandished a weapon toward deputies, and went back inside the house,” Sheriff’s spokesman Cpl. Jerry Brewer said. “Shortly thereafter we were able to talk with him and get him outside the house, where we were able to secure him, and now he’s seeking treatment.”

Residents were allowed to return to their homes after the investigation was over.
