ONLY ON 3 UPDATE: UNCW researchers digs up shark, take tissue samples
We have an update on the eight-foot sand tiger shark that died on Carolina Beach two weeks ago.
Teens say cops forced them to drag the shark onshore and let it die. The officers denied that ever happened. The shark was dumped in a maintenance yard where someone yanked out its teeth.
A research team from UNCW dug up the buried shark and took tissue samples. They sent the samples to three other researchers across the United States. The UNCW team determined the protected species was a female. Unlike other sharks, sand tigers can only have two pups a year. If anything like this ever happens again, the researchers want to know about it.
