Oak Island, NC (WWAY) — Operation North State is preparing to bring its annual Peer Fishin’ Festival back to Oak Island this fall, offering wounded and disabled veterans an opportunity to spend several days fishing along the Brunswick County coast.

The 11th annual festival is scheduled for Oct. 19-23 at the Oak Island Fishing Pier. Organizers expect between 500 and 550 people to participate throughout the five-day event, including veterans, their guests, volunteers and sponsors.

The Peer Fishin’ Festival is one of seven fishing festivals Operation North State plans to hold across North Carolina in 2026. The organization said the Oak Island event grew out of requests from veterans who participated in its other fishing programs around the state.

Participants must have a Department of Veterans Affairs disability rating to take part. According to the organization, about 80% of the veterans expected to attend have disability ratings between 80% and 100%.

Fishing passes, equipment when needed, bait and meals are provided to participating veterans and their guests at no cost.

Operation North State founder and volunteer Terry Snyder said some veterans and their families have turned the annual event into a weeklong trip to the area.

“The wounded warriors/DVets are so excited to have the opportunity to return to Oak Island this year and include their families and friends,” Snyder said in a news release.

Organizers are also seeking volunteers to serve as “pier mates,” assisting veterans with fishing throughout the festival. Donations of food, services and other supplies are also being accepted.

Several activities are planned during the week in addition to fishing, including appearances by service and companion dogs, events recognizing senior veterans and a planned skydiving demonstration near the pier. The Oak Island Fire Department is also expected to display a large American flag from a ladder truck during a designated Red, White and Blue Day.

A limited number of participant spots remain available, according to Operation North State. Veterans interested in participating can contact the organization for registration information.
