Opioid epidemic brings proposal for more inpatient beds at Wilmington Treatment Center

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — A Wilmington inpatient drug treatment facility is hoping to more than double its beds because of the area’s ongoing opioid epidemic, according to documents submitted to the city’s planning commission.

Wilmington Treatment Center is seeking to add 48 beds in a 17,283-square-foot addition, but must first receive permission to modify an existing conditional zoning district. If the rezoning is approved, the treatment center would add to the existing 44 beds and 36,030 square feet at its 2520 Troy Drive facility.

The city’s planning commission will hear the proposal during its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wilmington City Hall. Documents indicate the city’s planning staff has recommended conditional approval for the rezoning. The planning commission makes recommendations to the city council, which has the final say.
