Organ donation now possible online
CHARLOTTE (AP) — It will be easier for North Carolina residents to become organ donors, starting Tuesday.
The Charlotte Observer reports residents can register online to become organ donors at www.verybigheart.com.
North Carolina has allowed donors to register when they renew their driver’s licenses at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The online registry was created by Donate Life North Carolina, a group of transplant-related organizations. It links to the list of donors registered with the DMV.
Debbie Gibbs with LifeShare of the Carolinas says people won’t have to wait five or eight years to register as donors when they renew their driver’s license.
Those who register will receive return e-mails with confirmation numbers. The registry is accessed by donor procurement agencies only when someone dies.
