Orton conducting prescribed burn on 848 acres

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Orton is conducting a permitted prescribed burn on 848 acres Wednesday as part of its forest management and habitat restoration efforts.
According to Orton officials, the prescribed fire is designed to improve forest health and restore longleaf pine habitat. Officials said the burn is being carried out under strict criteria, including favorable weather conditions, in accordance with an approved safety plan.
The burn was scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and is expected to conclude around 7 p.m.
Orton said experienced local fire and safety professionals are on site throughout the operation to ensure the safety of nearby people and property.
Officials said the annual prescribed fire program, along with efforts from local partners, is part of a broader public-private initiative focused on strengthening and protecting the region’s natural habitat.
