Orton Plantation conducting controlled burn on 669 acres
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — If you see smoke in the air in our area, it could be part of a controlled burn at Orton Plantation.
According to a news release, Orton is burning 669 acres today as part of its management plan to improve the health of the forest and restore the longleaf pine habitat. The smoke may reduce visibility on Highway 133.
Orton will hold burns on 6,000 acres until May 1.
Orton says strict criteria such as the weather has been considered for today’s burn, in accordance with an approved plan that ensures the safety of people in the area.
Local fire and safety professionals are also on site during the burn.
