Overnight fire displaces four from Wilmington home

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A fire caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to a Wilmington home Tuesday morning.

Wilmington Fire Department says the fire happened just before 3 a.m. on the 300 block of Meares Street.

Three adults and a teen were inside at the time, but were able to get out safely.

Firefighters say it was a result of unattended cooking in the kitchen. The tenants had no renters insurance and the Red Cross was notified.

The damage to the structure is estimated to be around $35,000-40,000.

The accidental fire was contained to the kitchen, with smoke damage throughout the home.
