Paddleboarders take to water for kid battling brain tumor
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — For 24 hours today and tomorrow, teams of paddleboarders will take to the waters of Wrightsville Beach to raise awareness for childhood cancer.
The group is raising money for 7-year-old Owen Preston who is battling a rare brain tumor.
“Anything to raise awareness for the cause that we’re out here for, and to raise money for Owen’s family, in their time of need, it is very rewarding,” said April Zilg who is paddling.
The paddle boarders are in teams and will be taking turns in two hour shifts until Saturday at noon. Owen’s dad, Brian Preston said the dedication of the team members and the community means the world to his family.
“It feels incredible that so many people care about Owen and his condition and are willing to help,” Preston said.
And for paddlers like Barry Blackburn, the task is a no-brainer.
“To raise money for Owen’s family is the real reason, but to combine that with something I really enjoy is a blessing for me,” Blackburn said.
Tomorrow, all are invited to a “community paddle” at 10 a.m. in front of Carolina Paddleboard Company.
