Paddle tournament cleans waterways
ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A local community took a unique approach to cleaning up trash Saturday, putting their paddles to the water.
Participants of the Paddle Trash Fishing Tournament set out on paddle boards, kayaks and canoes to clean up Permuda Island near North Topsail Beach.
The tournament also gave prizes for the most trash cleaned up and most unique find. Organizer Lisa Rider said the challenge is made to raise awareness about the environment.
“We’re noticing more and more marine debris wash up, so plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glass bottles, styrofoam coolers,” Rider said. “You name it, it could be out there.”
Permuda Island is part of a National Research Reserve.
