Pair of veterinarians battle for 8th District NC Senate seat

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Early voting has been going on for a week now, and Election Day is right around the corner.

We sat down with the candidates for NC Senate District 8 candidates to see what issues they want to see fixed.

Both candidates have several issues on their mind.

Incumbent Republican Sen. Bill Rabon says he has accomplished a lot, but more needs to be done.

“Jobs and education. From there then we’ll go into regulatory reform, energy, transportation. We have a ways to go in transportation,” Rabon said.

His challenger Ernie Ward says he has three main goals.

“We need to raise teacher pay to at least the national average. We need to do a better job of recruiting good paying jobs to our area. Third we need to make sure that we protect our environment and our seniors,” Ward said.

One main focus they both say they have is education.

“We’ve spent a lot of money on administration and the Department of Public Instruction, but we have not spent enough money on the kids,” said Rabon, who has served two terms in Raleigh.

But Ward says the recent teacher pay raise needs to be fixed.

“It’s important that we level the playing field and that we respect and value all teachers regardless of how long they’ve been there,” Ward said.

The candidates have at least one thing in common. They are both veterinarians in Brunswick County. They each say they bring a lot to the table.

“I tend to try to bring everyone to the middle as much as possible and try to get as many votes for the bills that run as we can and listen to the folks back home, of course, and pass legislation that’s good for the state as a whole,” Rabon said.

Ward said, “I’ve been a local community leader for many many years. I’ve been involved with the schools and different outreach programs, so we know what southeastern North Carolina needs.”

There are still two days left in early voting before Election Day on Tuesday.
