Panthers scrambling to avoid holdouts
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have avoided a holdout involving defensive tackle Kris Jenkins. Now they're trying to sign their top three draft picks before training camp starts Friday.
Jenkins' agent said in an e-mail today that the three-time Pro Bowl pick will report to camp on time. Jenkins skipped June's voluntary workouts and had talked of wanting a new contract.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are trying to lock up first-round pick Jon Beason and second-round picks Dwayne Jarrett and Ryan Kalil before the first practice Saturday morning.
The Panthers have come to terms with their other five picks after reaching deals with fifth-round choice Tim Shaw and seventh-round pick CJ Wilson in recent days.
General manager Marty Hurney says he's hopeful the team will avoid any rookie holdouts.
