Parents concerned about busy intersection

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Some Brunswick County parents are very concerned about a busy intersection near their children’s school. There has already been one fatal accident at the crossroads. Residents fear it’ll happen again.

Robin Moody and her family live near Ocean Isle Beach Road — a road Moody says can be very dangerous where it intersects with Route 17.

Moody said, “I would like to see a traffic light, if possible, put here.”

Ocean Isle Beach road is one of the main routes into the beach town of Ocean Isle Beach.

“Holidays it’s a lot of traffic, a lot of congestion. It’s dangerous to cross,” Moody said.

One of Moody’s biggest concerns about the intersection is kids’ safety. She says carloads and busloads of kids cross the intersection every day.

Moody’s two children have to pass through this intersection. Ten-year-old Wade says the layout of the road there scares him.

Wade said, “It feels like I’m about to get hit because a car comes and it’s so close to hitting the back of the car.”

There was a fatal accident at the intersection in May, and Moody fears it’ll happen again.

“It’s only a matter of time until someone else gets hurt here,” Moody said. “And God forbid, like I said, it’s a busload of children.”

The Department of Transportation has reviewed the intersection. A spokesperson says there are no plans for a traffic light right now, but a left-turn lane will be added there.

A DOT spokesperson says the left turn lane is in the design process and could take several months to complete.
