Park(ing) Day promotes green, pedestrian-friendly spaces
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It may have been a bit more difficult to find a parking spot in downtown Wilmington Friday afternoon.
Metered parking spaces along Front and Chestnut Streets were taken over for Park(ing) Day!
This is the sixth consecutive year that the international event has been celebrated in the Port City.
More than 20 interactive parks and displays were set up along the city streets by a variety of local organizations.
The event is about promoting green and pedestrian-friendly spaces and all involved said it was a cool experience to be a part of.
“People around here value green space so much and so to be able to take this hard asphalt surface and turn it into a miniature park for a half a day or so is pretty interesting, it’s fun,” said Joseph Suleyman of the New Hanover County Department of Environmental Management.
Each organization that took park in Park(ing) Day paid for its metered space and installed its display.
Park(ing) Day was founded in 2005 by an art and design studio in San Francisco.
