Part of Brunswick County highway closed due to flooding

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram said part of a busy highway in Brunswick County is closing due to rising waters.

Ingram said in a Facebook post Friday afternoon NC 133/River Road is closing near Funston Road due to flooding. That area is between Boiling Spring Lakes and Southport, before you get to the Orton Plantation. Ingram said as of now, the area would not reopen until Monday. [mappress mapid=”346″]

Sheriff Ingram also says US 17 northbound at Pine Hurst Circle( SC) is being closed due to high water. This location is near the NC/SC state line.

As the night falls, area emergency crews urge drivers to stay off the road. With limited visibility, flooded roads will be more difficult to spot.

“Take precautions while driving at night,” Wilmington Fire Battalion Chief Randy Burton said. “Use your fog lights if you have to in the rain. Increase your following distance, your stopping distance. Pay attention to what you’re doing. Don’t text and drive.”

Officials add it only takes inches to flood a vehicle, so if you can stay at home tonight, please do so.
