Partial closure of Front Street begins Friday night
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – The Department of Transportation will close South Front Street at the intersection of Burnett Boulevard and Carolina Beach Road/U.S. 421 in Wilmington this weekend.
The area will remain closed from 7:00 p.m. Friday until 5:00 a.m. Monday.
A signed detour will route traffic to 3rd Street, Burnette Boulevard and Carolina Beach Road.
Drivers are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays.
The closure will enable crews to install a waterline and drainage system across South Front Street as part of the Greenfield Lake Culvert Replacement project, which began earlier this week with the removal of trees and shrubbery from the median.
In a news release, the DOT stated, “The original Greenfield Lake Culvert was built in the 1940’s and was damaged by recent hurricanes. The new culvert will have twice the capacity to handle water from Greenfield Lake, which gets run-off from adjacent neighborhoods and roadways.”
The project’s costs are estimated to be $3.24 million.
