Paws Place gets a new home in Winnabow

WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — Paws Place Animal Rescue is a safe haven for dogs who might not otherwise get a chance to live full and healthy lives. Now after over a decade in business, Paws Place is getting a new home.

For 15 years Paws Place in Winnabow has been giving dogs a second chance.

“Paws Place was founded in 1999 by a person who felt very strongly that she could do better than the counties were doing at that particular time and she wanted to be a no kill facility,” said Peggy Durso, the Operations Director.

“The dogs stay with us until they are adopted. No matter what,” said Durso.

Paws Place Runs on volunteers and donations.

“And we can always use help with folks fostering, adopting, volunteering in the day to day. Some folks come to volunteer multiple times a week others come once a month and they help in all different aspects,” said Shelby Bovenizer, the Operations Manager.

From training dogs to doing laundry, there is a job for everyone. But it is time for Paws Place to make a change.

“This has been an outdoor facility for 15 years. That is the dogs living outdoors, heat of the summer, cold of the winter, hurricane season. So it’s hard. It’s hard for the dogs, it’s hard for our workers,” said George Zimmerman, a board member.

The new facility will be right down the road from the current one on Route 87. It will have heating and air conditioning for the dogs as well as the folks who work there. Paws Place is hoping to have the new facility up and running by next year.
