Pedestrian safety awareness

Wilmington averages 15 or more traffic deaths a year.

The city adopted a comprehensive pedestrian safety plan called Walk Wilmington in August. It’s aimed at raising pedestrian safety awareness.

Chief Ralph Evangelous says pedestrian and traffic safety is a topic that needs to be addressed.

“If we had 15 murders here do you think people would be climbing up the walls and they’d be raising holy heck and saying why aren’t you gonna do something about the murders,” said Evangelous. “But we have 15 traffic deaths or 16, whatever the number is and people say well that’s just a part of doing business and I say it’s not.”
