Pedestrian struck on Market Street

A New Hanover County woman had to be hospitalized after being hit by a car while walking along Market Street Monday night.

New Hanover County Highway Patrol said thirty-five-year old Nicole Marie Harrison was walking south on the northbound side of Market Street last night when she stumbled into the road, and was hit by an oncoming car.

Highway Patrol said around 8:30pm Monday night, James McLawhon of Topsail Beach was headed north on Market Street.

Troopers believe Harrison was walking on the grass and stumbled into path of traffic. Witnesses say it’s rare to see a pedestrian anywhere in the area.

“I’ve seen some bicycles, I’ve never even seen anybody walking by here. There’s no sidewalk and there’s really no reason to cross the street, so I don’t see why anybody would be crossing there,” said witness Melissa Jacobs.

An employee at the Hess Station across the street called 9-1-1.

Highway Patrol said Harrison was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. There is no word on her condition at this time.

Highway patrol says speed was not a factor in the accident and no charges have been filed at this time.
