Pender Co. Schools: Topsail Elementary fire alarm working fine

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — WWAY and Pender County Schools discussed yesterday’s report stating the fire alarm system is not working at Topsail Elementary School.

The story included an interview with the school’s principal, who, in discussing the challenges that the school has had to overcome, said, “Some of it meant that we have things in our school that may not be working right now like our fire alarm, our front door buzzer.” The principal went on to explain that district maintenance workers had been working hard in the weeks leading up to reopening the school, completing needed repairs.

Prior to the reopening of schools, the fire alarm was not functioning properly, sending multiple alarms.

Today PCS provided to WWAY an inspection report that confirms the fire alarm system received its annual inspection on July 13, 2018. Pender County Schools’ maintenance department expedites all maintenance issues that affect the safety of students and staff – including fire alarms – bypassing the work order submittal system and responding immediately to fix the problem – as in this situation.

WWAY and PCS are committed to working closely together in the future to make sure the community receives the most accurate information. We are glad to have been able to provide this update to the benefit of all.
