Fire kills more than 1,000 pigs on Pender County farm

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – Several agencies are on-scene at a Pender County farm after investigators say a morning fire killed more than 1,000 pigs.

Director of Pender County Emergency Services, Tom Collins, said a passerby noticed the building was on fire and alerted officials. Collins says the building at 496 Bull Tail Road was already burned to the ground at that point. He says just after 6 a.m. crews.

Investigators say the Shiloh and Penderlea Fire departments put out the flames, but the fire had killed 1,200 pigs.

They estimate the fire caused about $400,000 in damage and the ATF is working to find out what sparked the blaze.
