Pender advances to 1-AA state title game in high school football

Last year Pender lost to SW Onslow in the state playoffs. Not this year !! Despite a fairly slow start Pender beat SW Onslow 28-17 Friday night in the East 1-AA Finals. Javon Powell rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Patriots past the Stallions. Powell had 140 yards on 21 carries.

Pender head coach Tom Eanes will be John Rendleman’s special guest on Sunday’s Coach’s Corner. The Coach’s Corner will air at 6pm on Sunday. The Patriots will play defending state champion Albemarle on Friday night in Chapel Hill at 7:30pm in the 1-AA state title game. If you missed seeing our highlights of the game on Friday’s newscast there will be even more on Sunday.

Sunday’s Coach’s Corner will also feature the East Bladen Eagles, but the season came to a close Friday night for East Bladen. After leading at halftime 26-0, Tarboro beat East Bladen 33-7. Tarboro will face Carver in the 2-A finals next weekend.

Wallace-Rose Hill is also heading to the state finals. The Bulldogs beat Plymouth 33-0 on Friday in the 1-A East Finals. Dawan McKinzie threw three touchdown passes for WRH. McKinzie rushed for another score. The Bulldogs have captured 27 consecutive games. WRH is the defending champ on the 1-A level.
