People react to Cosby’s sexual assault charge

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Bill Cosby was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on charges of sexually assaulting a woman in Pennsylvania in 2004.

There’s no doubt many were caught off guard seeing sexual assault allegations swirling around the comedian and actor.

“He was such a wonderful actor, but if all those woman came forward and said they were drugged and raped by this actor, maybe it is true,” said Susan Keegan.

With allegations piling up and now a felony charge some are beginning to believe the beloved TV dad and comedic genius could be capable of the crime.

“As sad as it is, things like this have to happen because if we don’t address it now, we’ll never get around to addressing,” said Tim Joyner. “They are still sexual predators whether they sell Jello, or wear sweaters.”

Seeing Cosby’s comical empire crumble is a sad sight for those who grew up watching and learning from him.

“I mean he did his job well and it really affected all Americans not just black Americans,” said Kevin Spears.

To fans it was a job well done on the small screen and on stage but many believe that success will now be overshadowed by this sex scandal turned criminal investigation.

According to reports more than 40 victims have come forward saying Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them. Meredith Staley, Coastal Horizons Center‘s Rape Crisis Prevention Education Coordinator, said this is showing victims that it’s not too late to come forward and talk about their assault.

“I think it is a huge victory for all victims who may not have the ability to come forward or they may not have chosen to come forward for whatever reason.”

Staley said 68% of sexual assaults are never reported to the police. She said though victims feel better about coming forward now than years ago there is still a lot of work to be done.
