Perdue pitches NC strengths for federal grants

RALEIGH, NC (AP) – North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue is returning to Washington with what she believes is an improved application to land a federal education grant of up to $400 million.

Perdue and state education leaders head to the nation’s capital Tuesday to show a review panel North Carolina deserves its share of $3.4 billion available through the Education Department’s “Race to the Top” competition.

North Carolina is one of 19 finalists in this second round of running for the federal education grants. The state also was a finalist in the first round but scored well off the pace of winners Tennessee and Delaware.

Perdue got the Legislature in May to create more options to try to fix repeatedly failing public schools to help boost the application.
