Photo of altercation between student, SRO shared on social media

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a picture of an altercation between an Ashley High School student and a school resource officer this morning was shared on social media.

Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer says detectives went to Ashley this morning to conduct a full investigation of the incident.

Brewer says the female student in the photo got into a fight with another student. He says a staff member broke up the fight and was assaulted by the student in the process. The school’s SRO then arrived to try and take control of the situation. Brewer says as the deputy took the 15-year-old girl to the counselor’s office the student screamed profanities and refused to follow directions before hitting the deputy in the shoulder. At that point, Brewer says, the deputy pushed the girl against a window and told her to calm down, which she did.

Brewer says investigators are taking out a juvenile petition order again the student, whose name is not being released because of her age, and whose face WWAY has chosen to obscure because she is a minor.

“We are working with the Sheriff’s Office on an investigation of the incident,” New Hanover County Schools spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum told WWAY in an e-mail. “There may be more information we can share with you after the investigation. We can not discuss the details of the incident because of student confidentiality laws.”
