Pitt county woman charged with animal cruelty

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in Pitt County have charged
a woman with animal cruelty after 76 dogs, cats and rabbits were
rescued from her home.

Sheriff’s deputies say 40-year-old Catherine Campbell is facing
21 counts of animal cruelty and neglect after the July 11 rescue.
Campbell was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. She is scheduled
to appear in court on Sept. 22.

A phone number listed for Campbell was not in service, and it
wasn’t immediately known if she has an attorney.

Pitt County Animal Control director Michele Whaley says she had
to seek assistance from the Humane Society of the United States and
other area shelters to find temporary board and care for the
animals. Whaley said many of the dogs had to be euthanized because
of their deteriorated conditions.
