Places to dispose unneeded medications in the Cape Fear
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In an effort to encourage the proper disposal of unwanted medications, New Hanover Regional Medical Center is partnering with regional healthcare, law enforcement, education and safety organizations to hold a first ever four-county medication disposal event.
Nine locations in New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, and Onslow counties are scheduled to accept all medications on Saturday, October 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 pm.
People who misuse medication often get their first dose by using medications prescribed to other people, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. To help stop the cycle in our own community, this event aims to reduce the risk of misuse or accidental exposure to medications, including opioids and other prescriptions.
Medications brought to the event should be in their original containers to help identify the medication. All personal information is removed. Law enforcement will be on hand to accept controlled substances. Medications can be prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins or herbal. Syringes and other sharps will be accepted.
